Sheriff's Safety Town selects contractor

Wednesday December 12, 2007
Sumrall Construction has been selected as the general contractor for Sheriff's Safety Town.
Three bids were received by the Caddo Sheriff's Office to build the new safety education center. Sumrall's bid of just over $1 million was accepted. The overall cost of the facility, which will include in-kind donations, has not yet been tallied.

The hands-on facility will be the first of its kind in Louisiana to teach children critical safety skills such bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle safety.

"Many people have worked hard over the past two years to design a first-rate facility that Caddo Parish and north Louisiana can be proud of," said Sheriff Steve Prator. "With the selection of the general contractor, we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. We're very excited to start building the structures so we can be open for school in the fall."

Sheriff’s Safety Town will be built behind Summer Grove Baptist Church near Jewella Avenue and LA Hwy. 3132. An education center, maintenance facility, small-scale streets, sidewalks, and a railroad crossing will be included in construction.

The education and maintenance buildings were designed by Fenner Consulting, while the small building facades were designed by Alliance Inc. Civil engineering and electrical engineering were donated by Mohr and Associates Inc. and Purtle & Associates. Cayce Hand has served as project manager. Recent work at the construction site includes roadwork and sidewalks that are under construction by F.J. Burnell Inc.
