Commercial art students and business and marketing students at Caddo Career & Technology Center have created print advertising campaigns and marketing business plans for Sheriff’s Safety Town as their year-end project.

CCTC is the career magnet for Caddo Parish. High school students from across the parish come from their home schools to CCTC for electives in over 20 career courses their junior and senior years. Each year, commercial art students complete a six-week project called the Ad Agency Project - a real-life, hands-on experience for high-school students considering a career in advertising, marketing and graphic design.

The project allows students to utilize all the career skills they’ve learned during the year in one culminating experience designed to closely approximate the actual career fields. Students learn creative advertising concepts, marketing principles, teamwork, business and time management, business ethics, presentation skills, as well as experience contact and critique through mentoring and judging by area professionals in the career fields. They work in teams as small advertising agencies to produce print advertising campaigns for a sponsor who is then free to use the work. Past sponsors have included General Motors, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Hockey Team, the Alliance for Education, the Red River Revel, Sci-Port Discovery Center, Haydel’s Game Calls, and Shreveport Green. This year’s sponsor is Safety Town, an ongoing project of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office to actively instruct children in safety procedures to prevent unnecessary injury or death.

For Sheriff’s Safety Town, CCTC students have created logos, letterhead packages, billboards, brochures, newsletters, post cards, sales/media folders, bumper stickers and t-shirt designs. This year, CCTC business and marketing students have developed business plans to utilize the advertising. The students will formally present the advertising campaigns and business plans to a professional judging panel, Wednesday, April 25. The judging panel will consist of the sponsors, area graphic professionals, and CCTC and Caddo Parish School Board dignitaries including: Steve Prator, Caddo Parish Sheriff, and Cindy Chadwick, CSO Public Information Officer; Bonnie Martinez, CCTC Principal; Janet Maines, In-House Graphics; Alan Hampton, Lamar Outdoor Advertising; and Kevin Martin, Martin Creative; among others.

In addition to working directly with Mrs. Chadwick and Sheriff Prator, the students have been mentored through email and in the classroom by area professionals including Dustin Lincoln, Graphic Designer for LeGrand Advertising and CCTC graduate, and Allen Garcie, Assistant Director, Conferences & Institutes, Division of Continuing Education & Public Service, LSU-S. Sara Agee, recipient a recipient of a CCTC Foundation Scholarship and current graphic arts student at Bossier Parish Community College, also mentored students through the same project in which she competed and won when she was a commercial art student at CCTC.

Following the formal ad agency presentations, the winners will be recognized at an Awards Celebration and Reception at CCTC, Thursday, April 26. At that time, Sheriff Prator and Ms. Chadwick will critique the project and the students’ performance, announce the winning teams, cite outstanding advertising pieces and business plans, and present the awards. The students’ work will be on display. The students’ families, the judges and mentors, Caddo Parish School Directors Ms. Flowers and Mr. Price, Caddo Parish Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Gunn, and Caddo Parish Superintendent Mrs. Tyler have been invited to attend.
